Fiddler on the Roof
Fiddler on the Roof – 1964
In 1964 the cast of the soon to be Broadway classic Fiddler on the Roof, led by the indomitable Zero Mostel, got together to record an original cast soundtrack. Photographer Marvin Lichtner exquisitely captured the energy and excitement of the occasion. Enjoy his photos in the gallery.

Fiddler on the Roof – 2016
Over 50 years later the cast of the fifth Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof hit the recording studio to record the musical’s now legendary tunes. Apart from the personnel one notable difference was the recording of ‘Dear Sweet Sewing Machine’ a song that was cut from the original 1964 production and didn’t appear in subsequent broadway revivals. The song tells the story of Tevye’s eldest daughter Tzeitel who eventually marries her love Motel, but not before warding off the advances of the rich middle aged butcher Lazar Wolf. The song finds Motel and Tzeitel pledging themselves to a tool that they hope will be a harbinger of better times.
In this music video, directed and edited by Ben Gettinger, Adam Kantor and Alexandra Silber perform as Motel and Tzeitel. Keep an eye out for a cameo by Broadway legend and lyricist of Fiddler on the Roof Sheldon Harnick.
The current incarnation of Fiddler on the Roof is currently playing to rave reviews at the Broadway Theater in New York City. Tickets are available through 2016. For more information visit the production’s official website.
