After being unable, on technical grounds, to take up his place at the Jewish Teachers Institute, a penniless and dejected Sholem moved to Kiev and struggled to make ends meet as a private tutor. He recalled “one angry landlady after another, merciless cockroaches, biting bed bugs, rats and other disgusting creatures.”
