Sofievka, 1876 – 1879
Sholem’s time in Sofievka was, he later wrote, “the best, the finest, the happiest years.” He worked there for three years as private tutor to the daughter of Elimelekh Loyeff, the wealthy Jewish magnate. Sholem and his tutelage fell in love, and the romance continued under wraps for three years before being discovered. Emerging from his room one morning, Sholem found an empty house, an envelope containing his pay and a sleigh waiting outside for his departure. He had been exiled from the Loyeff household.
