My Grandchild Bella

Bel Kaufman interviewed by The Yiddish Book Center in 2014.

Sholem Aleichem’s granddaughter Bel Kaufman was just six years old when Sholem Aleichem died. Her early memories of her grandfather included when he asked her to squeeze his hand as ‘the tighter you squeeze my hand the better I write!’. Remarkably Bel outlived her grandfather by over 98 years. In the video below a 102 year old Bel Kaufman, herself an acclaimed writer, says that her real inheritance was not the royalties offered in the Ethical Will but the ‘love and laughter’ Sholem gave her.
